Most lists of IELTS Speaking Part 1 questions stop at the questions. Reading them is the easy part; the hard part is answering each one out loud, clearly, without a pause to plan. This page lets you do that for real.

Pick a topic and answer its questions one at a time, with 30 seconds for each answer. Every question was written for Speakeroo, grouped by the topics Part 1 usually covers, and none comes from a past paper or another site. Speakeroo is not affiliated with, approved by, or endorsed by IELTS or its owners.

This page is for Part 1 only. For the other parts, see [IELTS speaking practice](https://speakeroo.app/ielts-speaking-practice).

## Questions

### What is IELTS Speaking Part 1?

Part 1 is the interview that opens the IELTS Speaking test. The examiner checks your identity, then asks short questions on familiar topics such as home, work or study, and interests. It lasts about four to five minutes.

### How long should a Part 1 answer be?

Aim for a couple of sentences, about 30 seconds at most. Answer the question directly, add one reason or a small example, then stop. Practice here gives each answer 30 seconds and moves on to the next question.

### How does the practice work?

Each session asks the questions of one topic, one at a time. A clock counts down for each answer. When it reaches zero the next question appears, and you can move on sooner if you have said what you wanted to. One recording covers the whole topic.

### Does Speakeroo give me an IELTS score?

No. Speakeroo does not give an IELTS score or estimate. After your take you see feedback on your fluency, pace and filler words, so you know what to work on next.

### Are these the real IELTS Part 1 questions?

Every question on this page was written for Speakeroo. None is copied from a past paper, an exam report, or another site’s question list. The questions follow the public format, so they are not the ones you will be asked in an exam.

### What if I have nothing to say about a question?

Say so and give an example from your own life. You do not need an impressive answer in Part 1. A true, simple one in clear English, with a reason, works better than a rehearsed one.
